 MARCH FOR BABIES

March of Dimes: What's your motivation to raise money for the March of Dimes?
Tom Russo: I have been involved with the March of Dimes since I was a child. My mother headed the March of Dimes on Staten Island, New York, and got me involved in collecting dimes in canisters. I ran the first four Walk-A-Thons on Staten Island in the 1970's. I have been involved for a long time.
Do you have personal experience with the March of Dimes mission?
My personal experience is through my mother who was very active.
Have you bettered your total each year?
I don't have a particular goal. It just so happens that each year my total has increased.
When do you start your fundraising?
I normally start a month before the Walk.
What is your overall strategy for raising money?
I contact personal friends. One-on-one meetings.
Can you give us a tip on how to raise money for March of Dimes?
I believe in the one-on-one approach to people and ask them for numbers that are probably higher than if they would volunteer the number to me. I try to estimate what someone is capable of giving, which often is more than what they want to give. I ask for that number. At that point, it is a negotiation.
What in your experience hasn't worked?
Not asking.
Have you inspired friends and family to volunteer?
My entire family collects money for the Walk, including my children.
